Phillips expressed her concern over the “disinformation” being propagated by Musk, stating that while it posed risks to her, it paled in comparison to the real-life consequences faced by victims of abuse.

Musk, known for his outspoken presence on social media, labeled Phillips as a “rape genocide apologist” and suggested that she deserved imprisonment. This incendiary commentary drew attention to the ongoing debates surrounding child sexual exploitation and the government’s response to such issues.

When asked whether these social media remarks had heightened her sense of personal safety, Phillips confirmed that they had. She acknowledged feeling fatigued by the situation but remained steadfast, stating that such challenges are not unfamiliar to those who advocate against violence towards women and girls. “I’m no stranger to people who don’t know what they’re talking about trying to silence women like me,” she noted, highlighting the ongoing struggles faced by women in positions of advocacy.

The exchange began when Phillips declined a request for the government to initiate a public inquiry into child sexual exploitation in Oldham, a decision that subsequently prompted calls from opposition parties, including the Conservatives and Reform UK, for a national inquiry into grooming gangs. This refusal, made in October, became a topic of controversy after being reported by GB News at the start of the year and later amplified by Musk on his platform, X.

In defending her stance against a national inquiry, Phillips argued that localized inquiries, like the one conducted in Telford, have shown to be more effective in fostering meaningful change within communities. Her comments underscore a broader debate regarding the most effective strategies for addressing systemic issues related to child exploitation and the complexities involved in handling such sensitive topics.
