Jewish Faith Leaders Being Investigated Following Criticism of Israel

A group of 36 Jewish leaders in Britain is currently facing scrutiny from the Board of Deputies of British Jews following the release of an open letter that critiques Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

Published in the Financial Times, the letter specifically condemned Israel’s response to the attacks by Hamas that occurred on October 7.

The Board of Deputies, representing more than 300 leaders within the UK Jewish community, had initially described its members as indicative of the diverse views held by British Jews.

However, in a recent statement, the board underscored that the letter does not align with its official stance regarding the ongoing conflict, thus initiating a disciplinary review for all signatories.

In their statement, they mentioned, “The recent letter issued by 36 deputies in the Financial Times does not represent the Board of Deputies’ policy on Israel. The board convened an extraordinary meeting to address the implications of this action.

“Due to numerous complaints from both deputies and the public, all 36 signatories are now involved in a formal complaints process.”

The board indicated that the investigation is expected to last approximately four weeks.

Phil Rosenberg, president of the board, remarked, “We treat alleged breaches of our code of conduct with utmost seriousness.

“I appreciate how swiftly the constitution committee has acted regarding the initial complaints, and it’s essential that they are allowed to proceed with due process and objectivity.”

“The board of deputies is unequivocal—only our elected honorary officers and authorized staff can communicate on behalf of our organization.”

In their open letter, the leaders expressed the necessity to acknowledge the impact of conflict on Palestinian civilians, stating, “We cannot turn a blind eye to the toll of civilian casualties.”

‘Stand up and speak out’

They continued, emphasizing their moral obligation to voice their concerns, “While the temptation to ignore the situation is strong, our Jewish values dictate that we must stand up and confront the reality.”

A recent ceasefire was briefly established earlier this year but was disrupted in March when Israeli airstrikes targeted high-ranking Hamas figures.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asserted that enduring peace hinges on the complete dismantling of Hamas.

However, the signatories to the letter have advocated for a diplomatic approach to secure the release of the 59 hostages currently held by Hamas, positing that peaceful negotiations are more effective than military action.

They described the current Israeli government as extremely right-wing, stating it encourages violence against Palestinians and exacerbates their economic hardships through settlement expansion and restrictive policies.

The letter concluded with a warning, “To remain silent is to signal endorsement of actions contrary to our Jewish principles.”

The health ministry in Gaza, managed by Hamas, has reported that the ongoing violence has resulted in tens of thousands of civilian casualities over the past year and a half.

Discrepancies have arisen regarding the accuracy of casualty figures, with variations in the estimates of the number of deaths reported.
