Jim Harbaugh, the newly appointed head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, has expressed interest in reuniting with former quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The two previously collaborated during their time with the San Francisco 49ers, where they progressed to the Super Bowl together in 2013. Harbaugh’s comment regarding Kaepernick’s potential role on the coaching staff came shortly after he joined the Chargers.
As reported by NFL insider Mike Florio, Harbaugh’s interest in incorporating Kaepernick into his new team emerged soon after his hiring. This week, Harbaugh confirmed that he communicated with Kaepernick about a coaching position, revealing that the quarterback is giving the opportunity some thought.
During an interview with USA Today, Harbaugh mentioned that his discussions with Kaepernick about a potential partnership occurred “early, early” in the year, although Kaepernick had not provided a response at that time. Nevertheless, Harbaugh remains optimistic about Kaepernick’s potential coaching career, suggesting he would excel in such a role. “If that was ever the path he was to take, I think that would be tremendous,” he stated. “He’d be a tremendous coach, if that’s the path he chose.”
Kaepernick, who has not played in the NFL since 2016, continues to pursue a return to the league. He has been vocal about his dedication to training and his eagerness to step back onto the field. His absence from the NFL aligns with his controversial decision to kneel during the national anthem as a form of protest against racial injustice and police brutality.
In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Kaepernick discussed his ongoing efforts to secure an opportunity with an NFL team, emphasizing that he has devoted his life to football and believes he could significantly contribute to a team’s success. “We’ve just got to get one of these team owners to open up,” he remarked, underscoring his determination to return to professional football.
Kaepernick previously praised Harbaugh after his victory with the Wolverines, stating, “Harbaugh is the one coach you call when you want to compete for a championship. Period.” This enduring respect highlights their strong partnership and reinforces the possibility of Kaepernick transitioning from player to coach under Harbaugh’s guidance.
