2024 Emmy Predictions: Jim Henson’s Legacy Competes for Best Documentary Special

The highly anticipated documentary “Jim Henson Idea Man” had its debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18 and is set to premiere on Disney+ on May 31, aligning perfectly to qualify for the upcoming 2024 Emmys. This film has garnered significant attention, landing eight nominations and currently leading the odds for Best Documentary or Nonfiction Special, as per the predictions of Gold Derby users. However, this consensus is not universally accepted among industry experts.

Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Ron Howard, “Idea Man” delves into the life and achievements of Jim Henson, the creative force behind the beloved Muppets franchise. The film stands out in its Emmy race with nominations for cinematography, directing, picture editing, music composition, sound editing, sound mixing, and writing, in addition to the coveted top award. Its strong backing is evident, with support from five out of 11 Gold Derby Editors, 21 of the Top 24 Users, and 20 of the All-Star Top 24, translating to favorable odds of 71/20 overall.

Despite this apparent dominance, the expert opinion diverges sharply. Only one out of the eight surveyed journalists aligns with the prevailing sentiment on Henson’s documentary winning. Instead, four experts favor Netflix’s “The Greatest Night in Pop,” which focuses on the iconic recording of the all-star charity single “We Are the World.” This film has only secured two additional nominations, for directing and sound editing, which raises questions about its overall support among voters. The remaining experts are betting on “Albert Brooks: Defending My Life,” a poignant tribute to the renowned actor, comedian, and writer directed by Rob Reiner.

This category has historically favored documentaries that resonate with those in the entertainment industry. Recent winners have included notable titles such as “George Harrison: Living in the Material World” (2012), “The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling” (2018), “George Carlin’s American Dream” (2022), and “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” (2023). However, this year, there is a notable exception: “Girls State,” which has not been centered on the world of show business, currently sits at the bottom of the odds chart. Yet, it may still pose a threat if the entertainment-focused entries dilute each other’s votes. This documentary, a follow-up to the award-winning “Boys State,” offers a keen insight into governance through the lens of a group of teenagers, making it particularly poignant in an election year.

Given the unpredictability of awards season, it’s essential to consider that any nominee could emerge victorious. Engage with the ongoing conversation and adjust your own predictions accordingly.
