Jimmi Simpson Returns to Black Mirror with New Insights in “USS Callister — Into Infinity”
Actor Jimmi Simpson is reprising his role as Walton in the much-anticipated sequel, USS Callister — Into Infinity, a follow-up to the acclaimed episode from 2017. The actor emphasizes that this new installment is not merely a continuation but a significant expansion of the story.
In an interview, Simpson expressed that the sequel brings added relevance to the narrative. “It makes everything more interesting and more pertinent,” he explains, highlighting how the themes resonate within today’s context.
The sequel reunites Simpson with his co-star Cristin Milioti and director Toby Haynes nearly a decade after the original aired. Reflecting on the experience, Simpson remarked that stepping back into the character felt natural and seamless. “It was like the gang was back together,” he recalls, noting that although some time has passed, the camaraderie remains intact.
Before taking on the role in the original episode, Simpson, who gained fame from his work in HBO’s Westworld, was an avid admirer of Charlie Brooker‘s anthology series. He describes his reaction upon receiving the offer as surreal. “I was driving home when I saw it pop up: ‘Black Mirror offer.’ I had to pull over to grasp what was happening. Why would Charlie Brooker know who I am?” he reflected humorously, illustrating his disbelief and excitement at landing such a prominent role.
The new chapter allows Simpson to explore Walton’s character more deeply, revealing layers to his personality that were previously unexplored. “I began to understand more how fearful Walton is, how lonely he feels,” Simpson notes. He discusses how the character’s choices reflect a desire to distance himself from reality, adding, “He has no idea who he is.” This exploration of Walton’s psyche parallels current societal issues, with Simpson drawing connections to men in power struggling to maintain control in a problematic manner.
Regarding the accolades that followed the original episode, including Emmy awards, Simpson views them as a pleasant bonus rather than a primary focus. “I’m always grateful for a response, but I can’t control it. It’s like the weather—sometimes it’s sunny, and people notice, while at other times, it’s not,” he explains. Ultimately, he emphasizes his love for the craft, stating, “When you love something and everyone else loves it too, that is truly special.”
