Billy Crudup Takes Center Stage in Ibsen’s Ghosts at Lincoln Center

Emmy-winning actor Billy Crudup is making his return to the New York theater scene with a fresh production of Henrik Ibsen’s classic play, Ghosts. This highly anticipated show is currently in preview performances at Lincoln Center Theater.

During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show, Crudup shared his insights on Ibsen’s work, noting the enduring relevance of the themes explored in the playwright’s repertoire. “The themes that he explores are really impactful regarding social dynamics: when there’s change in power structures, what happens at home, and the resulting drama,” he stated. He emphasized that Ibsen’s works continue to resonate with audiences, even six generations later.

In a lighthearted moment during the interview, Crudup and host Jimmy Fallon discussed a particular milestone for Fallon, who has been honored with a portrait at Sardi’s after his run in the eight-show production of All In. Crudup humorously remarked on his own long tenure in New York theater, saying, “For 30 years, I’ve been doing plays in New York, and I can’t get my picture up there at Sardi’s.” After their playful exchange, Fallon surprised Crudup by presenting him with his own Sardi’s portrait, much to Crudup’s delight.

The current adaptation of Ibsen’s Ghosts is reimagined by playwright Mark O’Rowe and directed by Jack O’Brien, with its official opening scheduled for March 10 at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater. The cast features notable talents such as Ella Beatty as Regina, Crudup as Pastor Manders, Levon Hawke as Oswald, Hamish Linklater as Engstrand, and Lily Rabe as Helena Alving.

The production’s artistic team includes set design by John Lee Beatty, costumes by Jess Goldstein, lighting by Japhy Weideman, sound by Mark Bennett and Scott Lehrer, along with original music by Bennett. Chris De Camillis is fulfilling the role of stage manager.

Returning home after years abroad, Helena Alving’s son harbors a disturbing secret that propels the story forward. Ibsen’s Ghosts unfolds as a gripping moral thriller that rigorously examines the complexities of love, obligation, and family. This compelling new adaptation, spearheaded by the acclaimed O’Rowe and O’Brien, captures the audience’s attention from the very beginning and holds it until the dramatic conclusion.
