In a humorous segment, Jimmy Fallon made light of President Donald Trump’s ongoing tariff controversy, likening it to a situation that unfolded during an interview with NFL coach Bill Belichick’s girlfriend, Jordon Hudson. Fallon quipped about how Trump, in his present media engagements, seems eager to portray a positive narrative amid economic challenges.
“As Trump marks 100 days in office, he’s launched a media campaign that the White House presents as a celebratory moment, though it appears he’s still searching for a victory,” Fallon remarked on his late-night show, “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” before mimicking Trump’s voice. Notably, Fallon referenced an incident where Trump deflected questions regarding tariffs that have impacted the economy by stating, ‘To quote Bill Belichick’s girlfriend, we’re not talking about this.’”
The reference stemmed from Belichick’s interview on “CBS Sunday Morning,” where Hudson, 24, interjected when asked how she and Belichick met. As the host, Tony Dokoupil, posed the question, Hudson interrupted, asserting, “We’re not talking about this.”
Following the interruption, a voiceover from Dokoupil clarified, highlighting the discomfort both Belichick and Hudson seemed to share regarding the topic. NBC Sports later reported that Hudson had interrupted the interview multiple times, with this particular instance chosen for airing because it encapsulated the tensions well.
Fallon drew the parallel during discussions around Trump’s economic policies, particularly concerning his trade disputes with China. In an ABC News interview reflecting on his second presidential term, Trump maintained his stance amidst significant criticism regarding his approach to trade, insisting that every voter knew what they signed up for when they supported him.
“There is a lot of concern out there,” noted ABC’s Terry Moran. “Many people, including some of your supporters, are expressing doubts, saying, ‘I didn’t sign up for this.’ How do you address their concerns?”
Trump responded, “Well, they did sign up for it, actually. This is what I campaigned on. I’ve been clear about how other countries have taken advantage of us.”
The complete segment featuring Fallon’s commentary is available in the accompanying video.
