Jinkx Monsoon, currently starring as Ruth in *Pirates! The Penzance Musical*, revealed the unexpected inspiration behind her decision to begin her medical transition. Surprisingly, it wasn’t any of her prominent Broadway roles that triggered this pivotal change, but rather her performance off-Broadway as Audrey in *Little Shop of Horrors*.
In an interview with the New York Times, she expressed how being cast as Audrey offered her the affirmation she needed to embrace her true self. “It was like, ‘I think the world’s ready to see you as an actress. They don’t need to see you as a drag queen, they don’t need you to perform maleness for them anymore — they see you as the actress you wanted to be,’” Monsoon reflected.
