New Adaptation of “Pirates! The Penzance Musical” Takes Center Stage
On March 6, the Roundabout Theatre Company’s cast and crew of Pirates! The Penzance Musical gathered to discuss their fresh interpretation of the beloved Gilbert & Sullivan opera. Rupert Holmes, the adapter of this new version, shared insights into the production, notably highlighting that Jinkx Monsoon will perform additional songs during the show.
Holmes described Monsoon as “a force of nature” and mentioned that he had included some songs specifically tailored for her voice from other Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. He noted, “There was a lack of a killer song in Act Two that I know she will just break people’s hearts with.” In this adaptation, Monsoon portrays the character of Ruth, suggesting a dynamic and exciting performance is on the horizon.
Besides “Pirates of Penzance,” Gilbert and Sullivan have created several other celebrated operettas, including H.M.S. Pinafore, The Mikado, and Patience. The anticipation builds around which songs Monsoon will showcase in her role, as the production gears up to begin previews on April 4, culminating in its official opening on April 24 at the Todd Haimes Theatre.
The cast of Pirates! The Penzance Musical features a robust lineup: Ramin Karimloo as the Pirate King, David Hyde Pierce as Gilbert/Major General Stanley, Nicholas Barasch as Frederic, Preston Truman Boyd as Sullivan/Police Sergeant, and Samantha Williams as Mabel Stanley. Additionally, the ensemble includes talented performers such as Kelly Belarmino, Maria Briggs, Eddie Cooper, and others, enhancing the overall richness of the production.
