Joe Gomez Facing Extended Absence Due to Hamstring Injury
Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, has confirmed that defender Joe Gomez is expected to miss a significant portion of the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury, which may necessitate surgery.
The 27-year-old England international was substituted just 11 minutes into Liverpool’s FA Cup fourth-round match against Plymouth Argyle on February 9, marking a disappointing return after a prior six-week layoff from another hamstring issue.
Currently, the club has not made a definitive ruling on whether Gomez will require an operation. However, Slot indicated that surgery could be a possibility, and regardless of the decision, the defender is anticipated to be sidelined for an extended period.
“It’s a significant setback for both Joe and the team,” Slot stated. “He worked diligently to return, but in his first game back, just after a sprint in the opening minutes, he faces another lengthy period out injured. This is particularly tough for any player, especially at such a crucial time in the season.”
Slot added that although Gomez’s absence will be felt over the coming weeks, there is hope he could return in time for the latter stages of the season.
Liverpool is set to face Aston Villa at Villa Park on Wednesday at 19:30 GMT, with ambitions to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to 10 points with a win.
Additionally, Cody Gakpo will also be missing from the squad after sitting out Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Wolves at Anfield due to a minor injury.
