Fitness influencer Joey Swoll expressed his deep concern after receiving a social media video that depicted a 14-year-old boy subjected to bullying at the gym. The footage featured a man filming himself flexing while the boy appeared in the background, only to be zoomed in on multiple times for the amusement of the creator.
As a well-known advocate for positivity in fitness spaces, Swoll regularly critiques negative behaviors in gym culture. He has vocally opposed those who exploit others for viral content, emphasizing the need for respect within gym environments.
On March 27, Swoll shared on X and Instagram about the distressing video he received from the boy’s father. The viral content not only stirred emotions but also led to significant harassment for the teen, exacerbated by its circulation at his school.
Impact of the Video on the Teen
Describing the incident, Swoll stated, “The comments on the viral video were filled with ridicule directed at the boy, which reached his school and resulted in severe bullying.” The teenager reportedly experienced “brutal torment” and expressed hesitance to return to the gym as a result.
In a bid to support the affected boy, Swoll announced that he intends to speak with the father to discuss potential assistance. He expressed a desire to invite the youth to the gym, aiming to restore his confidence in the fitness community.
“No young person should have to endure such an experience, nor should anyone be filmed in a gym locker room without consent,” Swoll stated. He assured his followers that he would provide updates on the situation.
Legal Support for the Teen
In a subsequent update on March 28, Swoll revealed that he had connected with the boy’s father, noting that the support garnered from his initial video had uplifted both the boy and his family. “It made the boy incredibly happy and even brought tears to his mother’s eyes,” he shared.
Despite reaching out to local law enforcement, the father indicated that they could not take action. In response, Swoll sought legal assistance, securing a lawyer willing to take the case pro bono to ensure the boy received appropriate support.
In a fortunate coincidence, Swoll discovered that the young boy lives relatively close by, only an hour away. He shared his intention to meet the teen for an in-person workout session to help him regain his confidence.
“My primary focus is to assist this young man and his family in moving forward and healing from this ordeal,” Swoll remarked. He expressed gratitude to all supporters, promising to follow through on his commitment to help the boy.
The positive response to Swoll’s updates highlights his influence in promoting a more inclusive and supportive atmosphere within fitness communities, indicating that social media can be a force for good in addressing bullying and instilling a sense of belonging for all individuals.
