Comedian John Mulaney recently shared a comedic anecdote on his Netflix talk show Everybody’s Live, detailing an ambitious yet ultimately thwarted attempt to secure a surprise appearance from the iconic hip-hop group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. Mulaney opened the segment with a colorful account of the week leading up to the show, revealing, “We had something very special planned for you this evening that we had to scrap very recently.”
Originally, the show had planned to pay homage to a fictional tortoise owned by actor Richard Kind, who had recently “passed away.” The act was set to culminate with a surprise performance by the group, as Mulaney humorously envisioned them arriving at his door and saying, “Our tour bus broke down and we heard you guys were sad.”
The Mishap of a Show
Mulaney and his team initiated communication with who they believed to be the group’s management to pitch their innovative idea. However, they soon found themselves entangled in a scam. A Zoom call with someone posing as the manager revealed the absurdity of the situation. This false manager claimed that while Bone Thugs-N-Harmony loved the concept, member Bizzy Bone couldn’t participate due to his busy schedule. Yet, when Mulaney and his team insisted on specific wardrobe requirements for the performance, the manager’s response was oddly dismissive: “The pants we bought don’t have pockets. If you want pants with pockets, you should get some yourself.”
The plot thickened when the manager requested $2,800 for “running around money” during the group’s tour. After convincing his wife, Olivia Munn, to provide the cash due to his restrictions on handling significant amounts of money from past issues with substance abuse, the manager then escalated his demands to $100,000 before Mulaney’s team recognized the growing list of red flags.
“I’m genuinely worried,” Mulaney admitted, expressing his concerns over the legitimacy of the individual posing as the group’s manager. His investigation led him to believe that they had indeed been trying to negotiate with a fraud.
The story caught the attention of Stereogum, which reached out to Bizzy Bone. Surprisingly, when asked about the unfolding situation, he responded with confusion, saying, “Whose that?”
