Jon Hamm Discusses New Drama Series “Your Friends & Neighbors”

In a recent interview, Jon Hamm opened up to “Extra’s” Jenny Taft about his role in the upcoming drama series “Your Friends & Neighbors.” In this new show, Hamm portrays a former hedge fund manager who, faced with divorce and unemployment, turns to thievery from his wealthy neighbors, leading to a series of harrowing entanglements.

Hamm shared his enthusiasm for taking on the lead role, emphasizing his admiration for executive producer Jonathan Tropper. “I’ve been a fan of Tropper’s work across various mediums—his novels, short stories, and screenplays,” Hamm noted. “His storytelling abilities gave me confidence that I was in excellent hands. Being an executive producer also allowed me to influence several creative choices, including casting Amanda Peet and Olivia Munn.”

Though he had known Peet and Munn socially prior to the project, Hamm expressed his excitement about collaborating with them professionally. “Having a pre-existing friendship adds depth to the characters we portray,” he explained. “Amanda and I share a long-standing friendship, as do Olivia and I. This familiarity translates into effortless chemistry on screen.”

When asked about potential awkwardness stemming from their personal relationships, Hamm replied humorously, “It’s part of our business; sometimes you find yourself in those strange situations where you’ve just acted out an intimate scene with someone’s partner. It’s all part of the job!” He acknowledged the presence of intimacy coordinators on set, emphasizing professional boundaries in such scenarios.

Relatable Themes in the Series

Hamm elaborated on the show’s themes, noting that while not everyone can relate to the immense financial pressure depicted, many can identify with the broader experience of job loss. “In today’s world, where expenses are high, it feels common to struggle to stay afloat,” he stated. “While the specifics may differ, the overall sentiment is relatable, and I hope viewers can connect with that element, rather than resort to drastic measures like theft.”

Fans can look forward to the show’s immediate future, as it has already been renewed for a second season. Hamm disclosed, “For me, it means jumping straight into shooting Season 2 just days after the premiere. We will continue to explore these complex relationships and further develop the narrative from the first season.”

In addition to this project, Hamm is preparing to host “Saturday Night Live” again after a long break. He mentioned, “It’s been 15 years since my last hosting gig. If there are any nerves, they’ve faded away by now. Hosting SNL is a unique experience in television, and I’m thrilled to be invited back.”

Hamm’s co-stars, Olivia Munn and Amanda Peet, also shared their thoughts on “Your Friends & Neighbors.” They expressed their admiration for Hamm and discussed the show’s examination of life among the affluent. Munn additionally opened up about her experience with breast cancer, speaking candidly about the personal choice to share her journey publicly.

“Your Friends & Neighbors” is set to premiere on April 11 on Apple TV+.
