Broadway Backwards Shatters Records with Celebratory Performance
Earlier this month, the Gershwin Theatre played host to a vibrant celebration of LGBTQ+ love and community resilience during the Broadway Backwards event. This unique evening showcased a remarkable fusion of talent and storytelling, highlighting the profound impact of hope within the LGBTQ+ community.
The event featured captivating performances, including Adam Lambert’s rendition of ‘Acid Queen’ from The Who’s Tommy, Kelli O’Hara’s heartfelt interpretation of ‘She Loves Me’ from She Loves Me, and Joy Woods’ moving performance of ‘How It Ends’ from Big Fish. These highlights, along with others, underscored the wide-ranging artistry of the evening, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
Broadway Backwards achieved a remarkable milestone, raising an unprecedented $1,111,788 to support Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center (The Center) located in New York City. This one-night-only event, expertly produced by Broadway Cares, exemplifies the power of theater to unite and uplift.
Distinctively, Broadway Backwards reinterprets beloved show tunes through a queer lens, presenting a singular platform that caters specifically to the LGBTQ+ community, allies, and friends. Each performance serves to bring forth the narratives that resonate with audiences yearning for representation on stage, fetching a blend of emotion and insight that is both refreshing and poignant.
