Josh Brolin Criticizes Oscars for Overlooking Dune Director Denis Villeneuve, Threatens to Exit Acting If Villeneuve Misses Nomination for Dune: Part Two.
Josh Brolin, recognized for his portrayal of Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, has voiced strong criticism regarding the Academy’s previous omission of Denis Villeneuve from the Oscar nominations for Dune: Part One. The acclaimed sci-fi film, which received a total of 10 nominations at the 94th Academy Awards, notably did not include Villeneuve in the Best Director category. With Dune: Part Two now in the spotlight, Brolin is advocating for the recognition of the talented director.
In an interview with Variety, Brolin asserted, “If he doesn’t get nominated this year, I’ll quit acting. It was a better movie than the first one. When I watched it, it felt like my brain was broken open. It’s masterful, and Denis is one of our master filmmakers. If the Academy Awards have any meaning whatsoever, they’ll recognize him.”
Reprising his role as Gurney Halleck in Dune: Part Two, Brolin serves as a mentor to Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides. The sequel has garnered more favorable reviews than its predecessor, highlighting Villeneuve’s remarkable skills in directing and storytelling.
With recent accolades from the IndieWire Honors 2024 and the Gotham Awards, Villeneuve stands a promising chance of securing a spot among the Best Director nominees. However, the nominations for the Academy Awards will not be revealed until January 17, 2025.
Reflecting on the 2021 Oscars, Brolin expressed his discontent in a prior Twitter video, where he criticized the Academy’s failure to acknowledge Villeneuve. He described the oversight as “unbelievable, almost numbing, flummoxing,” and questioned, “I don’t know how you get 10 nominations and then the guy who has done the impossible with that book doesn’t get nominated.” He summarized his feelings about the Oscars with frustration, stating, “It’s all amazing and then it’s all f—king totally dumb.”
As the awards season approaches, it remains unclear whether Dune: Part Two will dominate the ceremonies. Nevertheless, Villeneuve’s innovative vision has fundamentally shaped his standing in the industry. Meanwhile, Brolin is currently occupied with two upcoming projects—Weapon and The Running Man—and is anticipated to reprise his role in the envisioned Dune: Part Three. Fans are left wondering whether the Academy will respond to Brolin’s challenge.
