Josh Duhamel prefers raising his sons in the tranquility of his rural cabin in Minnesota as opposed to the fast-paced environment of Hollywood. The star of “Ransom Canyon” expressed in a recent interview how his 11-year-old son, Axl, benefits from exploring nature and engaging in outdoor activities that wouldn’t be possible in Los Angeles.

Duhamel emphasized the importance of creating family memories during their time in Minnesota. “My parents love coming out here to hang out, and my wife’s parents enjoy it too,” he stated. “In L.A., there are positives, but it’s valuable for Axl to get his hands dirty and assist me with various tasks.” He recounted an experience when Axl was reluctant to help cut wood from a fallen tree, but he believes such experiences will ultimately teach his son important life skills.

Lessons Learned in the Great Outdoors

Reflecting on the importance of self-sufficiency, Duhamel noted, “We had to tackle a snow-covered tree that fell during winter. He might grumble about it now, but these little lessons are vital.” The actor shares Axl with his ex-wife Fergie, and he has another son, Shepherd, with his current wife, Audra Mari.

Duhamel underscored the benefits of their remote lifestyle, saying, “Living 40 miles away from anything teaches them to fend for themselves. It instills a sense of responsibility they’re unlikely to find in Los Angeles.” He believes that these activities contribute positively to their upbringing.

“They enjoy being here with their friends, jet skiing, and tubing,” Duhamel added, illustrating a lifestyle filled with adventure and hands-on learning. Life at the cabin allows him to disconnect from the pressures of daily life, making him more aware of essential needs such as food, water, and warmth.

“My blood pressure drops as soon as I arrive here. It’s about survival rather than scrolling through my phone. We tackle challenges ourselves, like when our septic tank froze recently,” he explained, highlighting the satisfaction and problem-solving that comes from their off-grid existence.

Encouraging a Simpler Lifestyle

Duhamel advocates for this lifestyle not just for himself but believes others could benefit from similar experiences. “Having friends join us is always fun. Initially, it can be overwhelming, but they soon adapt, enjoying the simplicity of life away from devices. A break from technology can offer a refreshing new perspective,” he noted.

The actor lightheartedly referred to his Minnesota property as his “doomsday cabin,” situated along a challenging two-mile dirt path. Over the past 15 years, he has developed the property, including a rustic cabin and other structures on the land.

“It’s a charming little red cabin with a stone chimney right by the water, reminiscent of a Terry Redlin painting,” he described, showcasing both pride and joy in his retreat from the urban chaos.

Connection Between Professional and Personal Life

Professionally, Duhamel has made a mark on Netflix’s “Ransom Canyon,” where he portrays Staten Kirkland, who is determined to protect his land in Texas. He finds parallels between his character and his own background, citing his upbringing in North Dakota and the pride he takes in his cabin.

“Stan and I share a lot in common. I’ve invested years into shaping the land I cherish, even if I don’t manage livestock. I possess the equipment needed to run it,” he reflected on how the character resonates with his experiences.

With a strong ensemble cast, including Minka Kelly and James Brolin, Duhamel expressed enthusiasm for the project, reveling in both the narrative and the collaborative effort that brings the show to life.

The series, filled with themes of resilience and personal journey, showcases the rich backdrop of rural life while exploring deeper emotional connections within the storyline.
