A note from Wild Card host Rachel Martin: Joy Harjo stands as one of America’s most esteemed poets, a distinction that might not have been inevitable given her early life choices and challenges. Initially pursuing a pre-med track in college, she also explored her passion for writing through creative writing courses. Ultimately, her commitment to the arts triumphed, leading her away from a traditional career path.
Originating from Oklahoma and a member of the Muscogee Creek Nation, Joy faced significant obstacles regarding her creative expression. Her stepfather imposed strict limitations that stifled her artistic impulses, even preventing her from singing at home. Despite these challenges, once she gained independence, Joy recognized that her need to create — through music, storytelling, and poetry — was fundamental to her identity and existence.
Throughout her career, she has profoundly reflected the rich and varied experiences of Native Americans, using her poetry as a powerful medium for cultural expression and critique. In 2019, she made history by becoming the first Native American Poet Laureate of the United States. This spring, she is set to unveil a new edition of her celebrated work, For A Girl Becoming.
