Judd Apatow to Direct “Cola Wars” Film on 1980s Soda Rivalry
Judd Apatow has been tapped to direct a new film titled “Cola Wars,” which will chronicle the iconic rivalry between Coca-Cola and Pepsi during the 1980s. Steven Spielberg is set to produce the film through his production company, Amblin Entertainment, as reported by TheWrap.
The screenplay is being co-written by Jason Shuman, known for co-creating the Apple TV+ series “Acapulco,” alongside Ben Queen, who contributed to the writing of “Cars 3.” This collaboration aims to provide a compelling narrative around one of the most notable marketing battles in corporate history.
This film will delve into the intense competition between Pepsi and Coca-Cola, particularly highlighting the pivotal moment when Coca-Cola altered its classic recipe to introduce “New Coke.” This change, which was met with significant backlash from consumers, serves as a crucial turning point in the soda industry’s dynamics.
Currently, “Cola Wars” is in the early stages of development, having been acquired by Sony in April as a pitch. This suggests that there is still much work to be done before the film hits the screens.
Judd Apatow, recognized for his distinct comedic style, most recently directed the Netflix film “The Bubble” and the HBO documentary “George Carlin’s American Dream.” He is represented by WME and Mosaic.
This project was initially brought to light by Deadline, adding to the anticipation surrounding its development.
