Julia Michaels and Maren Morris Shine on The Tonight Show
Today marks the release of Julia Michaels’ new single, “GFY,” which she performed alongside Maren Morris on The Tonight Show. The performance was a vibrant showcase, beginning with Michaels’ solo delivery of “GFY,” followed by a duet on their collaborative track, “Scissors.”
This partnership birthed the song “Scissors,” which the duo released in January. The track offers a humorous take on the process of moving on from past relationships. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Michaels described the essence of “Scissors,” explaining that it reflects her unbothered attitude toward breakups. She stated, “I’m not pressed if someone wants to leave. Half the time I don’t want them to stay either.”
Maren Morris contributed her perspective, emphasizing the song’s lightheartedness. “It’s about being nonchalant when a relationship fizzles, because, let’s be honest, most of them do,” she noted. Morris also highlighted the need for songs that depict apathy in breakups, suggesting that the emotional spectrum of relationships isn’t always marked by heartbreak.
The collaboration between Michaels and Morris on “Scissors” represents their second partnership, following their previous release, “Cut,” which debuted last June. Despite the thematic similarities in their titles, Michaels mentioned that it was merely coincidental as each was penned individually. She remarked, “It was just a wonderful and silly coincidence when these duets came together.” Morris echoed this sentiment, referring to the titles as reflective of “cosmic divinity.”
In addition to her performance on the show, “GFY” stands as Michaels’ latest single, accompanied by a music video set to premiere later today. This release adds to her impressive lineup of 2024 singles, including “Heaven II,” a collaboration with Josh Ross titled “Want This Beer,” and a duet with Joe Jonas on Alan Walker’s “Thick of it All.” Michaels’ last full-length album, Not in Chronological Order, was released in 2021.
Maren Morris has similarly been active in her musical pursuits, having released her Intermission EP last year. Her track “Kiss the Sky,” from The Wild Robot, earned a Golden Globe nomination. In addition to her work with Mt. Joy on “Highway Queen,” she released the solo track “People Still Show Up” in October, further showcasing her diverse artistry.
