Julie Banderas Releases New Children’s Book Addressing Respect and History
Julie Banderas has unveiled her latest children’s book titled “A Monumental Mistake,” which is centered on teaching children the importance of respect, a value she believes is declining in contemporary America.
The narrative follows four young animals—Fiona the lioness, Mobi the bear, Arthur the lion, and Cassius the tiger—who discover a forgotten statue in Wiggamore Woods. Their varied reactions serve as a backdrop for lessons on history, respect, and listening to friends.
“The story reveals a significant lesson about the consequences of disrespecting monuments and the importance of heeding the advice of friends when they warn against negative behavior,” Banderas shared in an interview. “This illustrates how disrespecting history and the feelings of others can lead to unforeseen consequences.”

In collaboration with BRAVE Books, known for its focus on Bible-based morals, Banderas aims to instill two key principles within the story: honoring historical significance and valuing friendships.
“Ultimately, the characters learn that understanding and respecting history is crucial for safeguarding the future,” Banderas explained. “They also come to understand that true friendship means listening to one another instead of dismissing valid concerns.”
The inclusion of a historic statue is particularly relevant as Banderas drew inspiration from recent events where monuments in the U.S. were removed or defaced, which caused widespread outrage among many Americans.
Reflecting on Contemporary Issues
RFK JR. SLAMS DEMOCRATS FOR TOPPLING CONFEDERATE STATUES: ‘DESTROYING HISTORY’
“This book is influenced by a politically charged atmosphere along with parental concerns regarding historical erasure,” she noted. “Many people were disheartened to see such action during the Biden administration, prompting my desire to address these themes in a children’s book.”
“Acknowledging history doesn’t mean endorsing everything we see; it’s about teaching children to process and learn from both our proud moments and our missteps,” Banderas stated. “Our past actions don’t define us wholly, but they do provide lessons for future generations.”
As a parent of three, Banderas emphasized her commitment to fostering a sense of respect among young people, encouraging them to combat the pervasive negativity she perceives in today’s society.
“Respect seems to be diminishing these days, and with rising tensions surrounding differing opinions and ideologies, promoting kindness is essential,” she remarked. “In my household, the term ‘hate’ is not permitted. We strive to create a space where love prevails over hostility.”
The Story’s Educational Intent
“A Monumental Mistake” offers an engaging story about the accountability tied to historical awareness.
Banderas’ partnership with BRAVE Books marks her second collaboration following the 2022 release of “Fiona’s Fantastical Fort,” where children learned the value of perseverance.
“As a conservative Christian publishing house, BRAVE Books aligns with my values as a mother,” she noted, asserting that the teachings in her book extend beyond childhood into parental responsibilities.
Banderas hopes that “A Monumental Mistake” will resonate with both children and parents alike, fostering discussions about respect and humility. She remarked, “Reinforcing these core values is critical in nurturing well-rounded individuals, particularly in a world where children often seem to take their privileges for granted.”
