Julien Baker and Torres Unite for Upcoming Country Album
The musical partnership of Julien Baker and Torres is set to culminate in the release of their collaborative country album, Send a Prayer My Way, scheduled for debut on April 18.
During a recent appearance on The Daily Show, the duo showcased their poignant country ballad “Bottom of a Bottle.” Dressed in coordinating custom suits, they delivered a moving performance accompanied by a live band, all set against an eye-catching backdrop.
The track “Bottom of a Bottle” is part of their upcoming album, which consists of 12 tracks, including earlier released singles “Sugar in the Tank” and “Sylvia.”
Prior to their performance, Baker and Torres, whose full name is Mackenzie Scott, engaged with host Michael Kosta. They discussed their album’s creation and shared the story behind their striking nudie suits, crafted by Union Western.
Reflecting on their collaboration, Scott revealed, “Julien and I have been friends for a while and when the pandemic lockdown occurred, I texted her out of the blue because I had been thinking about making a country record for some time. I didn’t want to do it alone, and Julien was the first person I thought of because of our shared Southern roots; she’s from Tennessee, and I’m from Georgia. It felt natural.”
The pair also discussed the label of “queer country” that has been associated with their music. Scott expressed pride in their identity, stating, “I’m certainly proud of that. We’re queer. But if it were up to me, it would just be country.”
Following the album release, Baker and Torres are set to embark on a North American tour starting April 23 at the National in Richmond, Virginia, and concluding on May 12 at the Admiral in Omaha, Nebraska. Their schedule also includes a series of festival performances, notably at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee, later in March, as well as the Zootown Music Festival in Missoula, Montana, in July.
