Breaking the Binary Theatre has announced the full lineup for its third annual Breaking the Binary Theatre Festival, which is set to run from October 21 to October 27, 2024. This festival continues the theatre company’s commitment to spotlighting work crafted by transgender, non-binary, and Two-Spirit+ (TNB2S+) artists.

The festival will kick off with “TRUTH //: An Interdisciplinary Variety Show” at Littlefield in Brooklyn, featuring a diverse cast including Alaïa, Anania Williams, Ari Notartomaso, César Alvarez, Jade Jones (known as Litty Official), and many more. This opening performance combines various forms of artistic expression and revolves around the theme “truth // dare.”

Following the opening, the festival will move to the Peter Jay Sharp Theater at Playwrights Horizons, showcasing several other productions. Highlights include:

  • PRUNIN, HOEIN, N CUTTIN GRAPES: A play by Nissy Aya, directed by Dominique Rider, featuring Aja Lynn Downing, Mariyea, and Temidayo Amay.
  • HARVESTING OLIVES: A COLLECTIVE IMPROVISATION: Created by Yaffa AS and co-produced by Tony Award-winner Sara Ramirez, this piece invites participants to explore themes of community and oral history through improvisation.
  • FIRESIDE DANCES: A play by MJ Kaufman that tells the story of a young girl adjusting to life in a new environment amidst clashes of culture and identity.
  • A RARE BIRD: Written and directed by Zaza Diana Oh, this interdisciplinary work examines romantic interactions through a unique lens.
  • LUPE FINDS ME IN THE GARDEN OF DREAMS: Focusing on a trans playwright, the story weaves together elements of cinema history and personal exploration.
  • // DARE: A COLLECTION OF COMMISSIONED SCENES AND MONOLOGUES: This finale piece is co-conceived by L Morgan Lee and George Strus, featuring both established and emerging works from various writers.

Festival casting is managed by The Telsey Office, and renowned actor and activist Sara Ramirez has recently joined the Core Community Advisory Board. Ramirez previously participated in the festival last year and helped raise significant funds for charity through past productions. Their involvement in co-producing “HARVESTING OLIVES” highlights their commitment to TNB2S+ visibility in the arts.

Ramirez shared their thoughts on the festival, expressing gratitude for the space created by Breaking the Binary, stating, “This organization works to artistically connect us around our commonalities as well as our differences.” Their commitment to community engagement and representation in the arts is evident in their roles both as a performer and a producer.
