Kabir Bedi Discusses His Relationship with Parveen Babi and Its Impact from Mental Health Struggles
Kabir Bedi has opened up about his romantic involvement with actress Parveen Babi, highlighting how her battles with mental health ultimately led to their breakup.
The relationship between Kabir Bedi and Parveen Babi was intense but brief, coinciding with a tumultuous time for Parveen as she faced ongoing mental health challenges. In a recent interview, Kabir candidly discussed the dynamics that led to their separation. He revealed that his attempts to persuade Parveen to seek therapy were met with resistance, ultimately leading her to end the relationship.
During a conversation with Digital Commentary, Kabir recounted how Parveen accompanied him to Italy amid the rise of his popularity from the television series *Sandokan*. It was in London that he began to notice her mental state worsening. “I could see that her condition was getting worse. And I told her that she must take treatment. But she did not agree to it at all. I knew that if she does not take any treatment, her condition might get worse. And this is why we eventually separated,” Kabir shared.
He clarified that it was actually Parveen who chose to end their relationship. “She left me because she was afraid that I would force her to get treatment. Paranoid minds are scared of everything. She was worried that if a doctor found out, it could ruin her career,” he explained. Kabir emphasized, “Parveen Babi left me, I didn’t leave her.”
In addressing narratives that blamed their breakup for worsening Parveen’s mental health, Kabir firmly rebutted them. “The media claimed I rejected Parveen and that’s why her mental health deteriorated. The reality is that Parveen already had mental health problems,” he asserted.
Kabir expressed deep sorrow over Parveen’s tragic passing, recalling the emotional weight of her funeral in 2005, which many former partners, including himself, Mahesh Bhatt, and Danny Denzongpa, attended. “I was very upset when she died under very tragic circumstances,” he remarked.
In his autobiography, *Stories I Must Tell: The Emotional Life of an Actor*, Kabir shares insights about his open marriage with Protima Bedi, which eventually failed after her infidelity. It was in this chaotic chapter of his life that he encountered Parveen. His book provides a broader narrative surrounding Parveen’s mental health struggles and her connections with other significant figures in her life, including Mahesh Bhatt and Danny Denzongpa.
The pressures of Kabir’s filming schedule for *Sandokan* in Italy strained their relationship, culminating in their separation. Following their split, Parveen reportedly turned to filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt for support, who aided her in navigating the emotional fallout of her romance with Kabir. Through his reflections, Kabir paints a poignant account of their shared experiences, underscoring the love, loss, and the complexities of confronting mental health disorders in the public glare.
