LOS ANGELES — Former Vice President Kamala Harris is set to deliver a significant speech on Wednesday, where she will directly confront President Donald Trump. This address comes amidst ongoing speculation about Harris’s political future—whether she is preparing for another presidential bid or considering a run for California’s governorship.
Harris’s remarks will take place during the gala celebrating the 20th anniversary of Emerge America, an initiative that supports the recruitment and training of Democratic women aiming to hold political office. The organization owes part of its growth to Harris’s own campaign as San Francisco’s district attorney in the early 2000s.
This speech follows one day after Trump marked 100 days in office, making it a pivotal moment for Harris. She is anticipated to deliver her most comprehensive public comments since exiting the vice presidency in January after her defeat to Trump, tackling issues related to his governance of the economy, U.S. institutions, and foreign relationships.
Harris is increasing her visibility at a time when Democrats are assessing their strategy for the future following a challenging election in November, where the Republican Party regained control of Congress. Among a variety of candidates, including governors and business leaders vying for influential roles within the party, Harris’s presence would be crucial in any future election she decides to contest.
Having previously served as California’s attorney general and U.S. senator, Harris has not dismissed the notion of running to succeed the term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom, who is also eyeing a potential presidential run. Likewise, a second presidential campaign remains a possibility for her.
She continues her fundraising efforts through a joint committee comprising her presidential campaign, the Democratic National Committee, and various state Democratic organizations. As per federal records, the Harris Victory Fund indicated it had approximately $4.5 million available at the end of March.
In her recent fundraising communications, Harris has emphasized the necessity for Democratic unity before the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
She stated the importance of organizing efforts to counter Trump’s agenda while striving to elect Democrats in all areas. Highlighting the urgency of the moment, she asserted, “There has never been a more important time for a strong Democratic Party — one that is willing to stand up to Donald Trump, Elon Musk and what they are doing to this country.”
The upcoming event also represents a return for Harris, who resides in Los Angeles, to her roots in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Emerge America’s gala is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. PDT. Harris’s speech will be available for live streaming on the AP’s YouTube channel.
