Kansas City Prepares for Tornadoes, Hail, and Strong Winds

Upcoming Weather Forecast for Kansas City

Kansas City is set to experience dry and mild conditions on Saturday. However, the National Weather Service cautions residents about a significant storm system that could bring severe weather, including large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes at the start of the work week.

The local forecast indicates mostly cloudy skies with temperatures hovering around 65 degrees, slightly below the seasonal average of 68 degrees.

A high-pressure system currently over Minnesota is expected to move eastward, settling over the western Great Lakes by the evening, as noted in the forecast discussion.

As Saturday night approaches, the likelihood of showers and thunderstorms will increase, particularly south of Interstate 70, continuing into Sunday morning. However, no severe weather is anticipated during this period.

On Sunday, temperatures are expected to reach the low 70s, and the forecast indicates a 50% chance of rain showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Severe Weather Expected Next Week

Attention will then shift to the possibility of severe storms on Monday evening and into the night.

The National Weather Service highlights that if storms develop on Monday afternoon or evening, they could pose a significant risk of becoming severe. The atmosphere is conducive to supercells, which can generate large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes.

Supercells are characterized as rotating storm systems distinguished by their tall, anvil-shaped clouds, capable of producing extreme weather conditions. Under the right circumstances, these thunderstorms can persist for several hours.

Despite the alarming forecast, there is some uncertainty about the timing and location of storm development. This uncertainty arises from the lack of a robust weather front to facilitate storm formation and unclear wind patterns that could impact storm development.

The Storm Prediction Center of the National Weather Service indicates that severe weather outbreaks are feasible across several areas in the Midwest and Upper Midwest.

Cities such as Kansas City, Overland Park, Omaha, Minneapolis, and Madison, Wisconsin, are under an enhanced risk category for severe weather, categorized as level three on the Storm Prediction Center’s scale.

An outbreak of severe weather is anticipated throughout the Midwest on Monday, with Kansas City and surrounding areas facing potential risks for large hail and tornadoes.

St. Paul, Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and other nearby regions are classified under a moderate risk level, which is the fourth level of the same scale.

Temperatures on Monday afternoon are projected to rise into the low 80s, further contributing to the storm dynamics.

As a cold front moves through the area, additional storms are likely to develop by Monday night, although the chances for severe weather are deemed lower. The main threats will persist as damaging winds and large hail.

Potential Rounds of Showers and Storms

The cold front arriving overnight from Monday into Tuesday is expected to stall just south of Kansas City, leading to potential active weather patterns through the end of the week.

Tuesday will start off sunny, with highs reaching near 70 degrees.

According to the weather service, “This front then becomes the focus for additional rounds of showers and storms.” If it remains just south of the area, the best opportunities for rain will also lie to the south.

Nevertheless, the southern parts of the Kansas City forecast area are expected to maintain a 25-75% chance of rain from Wednesday into Thursday.

The weather service indicates that it may not be until late in the week or possibly the weekend that the chances for rain will diminish.
