Kapil Sharma and Rajiv Thakur’s Challenge of Homeownership in Mumbai

Rajiv Thakur, widely recognized for his role in The Great Indian Kapil Show, recently shared the struggles he and close friend Kapil Sharma faced while trying to purchase a home in Mumbai. Their journey highlights the harsh realities of the city’s real estate market.

After establishing their careers in Mumbai, both Kapil and Rajiv aimed to invest in a house. With dreams of homeownership, they saved diligently and amassed Rs 50 lakh. However, they soon discovered that this amount was insufficient to secure a 2-BHK flat in the Andheri area, which was priced at around Rs 75 lakh at that time.

While discussing their experience on the YouTube channel DostCast, Rajiv reflected on their naivety regarding the home buying process, admitting they had never even considered applying for a home loan. In an effort to find a more affordable option, they shifted their focus to Malad, where they found a flat they liked but once again faced high prices that seemed out of reach.

In a bid to negotiate, Rajiv employed a creative tactic by convincing the seller to lower the price by suggesting they would purchase three flats in total. He stated, “Kapil and I would buy one each and we would find someone to buy the third. When the seller quoted Rs 54 lakh for the flat, I managed to negotiate it down to Rs 45 lakh.” Despite this, the long journey back to Andheri, which took about an hour and a half, led them to realize they wouldn’t be returning to Malad for a home purchase.

Ultimately, by the time they managed to save Rs 70 lakh, market prices in Andheri had escalated to Rs 90 lakh. Rajiv remarked on their earlier financial struggles, emphasizing their lack of knowledge about home loans, which they had never considered as an option. “We were so poor that we didn’t know that one can avail a home loan,” he recalled.

The duo, along with other stars like Archana Puran Singh and comedians such as Kiku Sharda and Sunil Grover, have not only entertained audiences but also symbolized the challenges many face while pursuing their dreams in the expensive city of Mumbai.
