Violence Erupts in Kashmir, Disrupting Tourism Boom
SRINAGAR (Reuters) – Gunfire echoes across the picturesque meadows of Kashmir and images of bloodshed mar the region’s reputation as India’s burgeoning tourism hub. The recent violence, marked by a tragic attack that claimed the lives of at least 26 tourists, has sent shockwaves through an area that had been experiencing a surge in visitors, thanks to years of relative calm.
The breathtaking landscapes of Kashmir have traditionally attracted tourists from all over, with records showing more than three million arrivals last year—a stark increase from under 831,000 in 2018. This revitalization in tourism, often cited as a key achievement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has now been overshadowed by fears following the assault in Pahalgam, renowned for its stunning Himalayan scenery.
This recent incident marks one of the region’s deadliest attacks in years, prompting many frightened travelers to seek immediate evacuation just as the summer season was set to begin. Prime Minister Modi and his finance minister both curtailed their foreign visits, returning to address the situation and promising that those responsible will face consequences.
Kashmir’s turbulent history, characterized by a long-standing conflict over its status and autonomy—particularly following its reorganization in 2019—has left many locals apprehensive. The region is a point of contention between India and Pakistan, both of which lay claim to the territory.
In the aftermath of the attack, local leaders have organized protests to express their outrage, while tourist operators face severe cancellations as safety concerns mount. Airlines are responding to the spike in demand from travelers wishing to leave by arranging extra flights from Srinagar.
As a vital pillar of the Kashmiri economy, the tourism sector has seen significant investments and promotions from the government. However, this latest violence threatens to undermine years of progress. The influx of visitors has also drawn criticism from some locals, who view it as an invasion of their culture.
Local lawmaker Sajjad Lone reacted to the attack by lamenting the impact on the community’s hospitality and economic recovery. “These cowardly acts of terrorism aim to dismantle the progress made in tourism and economic stability,” he stated.
The militant group known as “Kashmir Resistance” has claimed responsibility, alleging that over 85,000 outsiders have settled in the region under the guise of tourism, calling for violence against these individuals. Nevertheless, data from recent years indicates that civilian casualties have significantly decreased.
Participants in the tourism industry, including taxi drivers and operators, shared their grief and concerns over lost business opportunities. Many expressed fears that the resurgence of violence would hinder not only their livelihoods but also the broader aim of attracting foreign investment in the region.
As panic set in, ticket prices soared due to heightened demand for flights. However, the government quickly intervened, urging airlines to limit price increases and boost the number of available flights. The Ministry of Civil Aviation indicated that it was working to accommodate tourists desperate to return home.
Reports indicate that travel agents had to cancel as much as 90% of upcoming bookings, while local transport services faced a sudden withdrawal of tourists. Shakir Ahmed, who oversees a tourist taxi union, described his concern over empty streets, noting that what typically feels like vibrant summer festivities has turned into an eerily quiet situation.
Earlier this year, Modi inaugurated new infrastructure developments aimed at improving the tourism experience in Kashmir. He emphasized the region’s transformation into a preferred travel destination, celebrating its newfound recognition as a “paradise on earth.” However, the recent violence prompts a reevaluation of this narrative, as he vows justice for the victims of the attack.
Prime Minister Modi, in a statement during a visit to Saudi Arabia, assured the public that those responsible for the tragedy would not escape the law, underscoring the government’s commitment to restoring peace and safety in the region.
