The Sharon Playhouse is currently showcasing the vibrant musical comedy, “The Prom,” running until August 11th. This production promises an engaging theatrical experience filled with laughter and poignant storytelling.
“The Prom,” nominated for seven Tony Awards, draws inspiration from true events. The narrative revolves around four diverse Broadway performers seeking a new purpose. When they learn about a controversy surrounding a high school prom in a small town, they see it as an opportunity to take center stage in more ways than one. The underlying conflict arises when a student wishes to attend the prom with her girlfriend, igniting a series of events that challenges the town’s social norms. Celebrated for its humor and heartfelt moments, “The Prom” has won the Drama Desk Award for Best Musical and resonates deeply with contemporary audiences.
The creative team behind “The Prom” includes the talented trio of Matthew Sklar, Chad Beguelin, and Bob Martin, whose combined efforts result in a compelling script and score. The production will be directed by Carl Andress, the Artistic Director of The Sharon Playhouse, with choreography by Krystyna Resavy. Additional cast members include Sophie Nassiri Morvillo as Alyssa Greene, Erick Pinnick as Mr. Hawkins, Savannah Stevenson as Angie, Ryan J. Palmer as Sheldon Saperstein, and Tracy Liz Miller as Mrs. Greene. The ensemble features a dynamic mix of talent, including Zoe Benjamin, Anissa Marie Greigo, Noah Silverman, and Nick Traficante, among others. Notably, the production includes eight local high school performers from Duchess and Litchfield counties, adding an authentic community aspect to the show.
