Inside “Running Point”: A New Series Highlighting the Life of Jeanie Buss
Actresses Kate Hudson, Brenda Song, and Mindy Kaling recently shared insights about their upcoming series “Running Point” in an interview with “Extra’s” Melvin Robert. This new show, executive produced and co-written by Kaling, stars Hudson as a reformed party girl who finds herself unexpectedly managing her family’s professional basketball franchise.
The narrative draws inspiration from the real-life experiences of Jeanie Buss, the owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, and her family’s legacy in basketball. Hudson disclosed her longstanding connection with Buss, stating, “I’ve known Jeanie since I was 14 years old. Realizing that this story is loosely based on her journey as the first female owner in the NBA, along with the complexities of her family dynamics, felt like a dream and a true honor.”
During discussions about the series, Hudson praised Buss for her openness, saying, “Jeanie was so cool and she really was open.” Kaling emphasized Buss’s influence on the show, calling her the “heart of the show” and explaining the origins of the project: “She came to me about five years ago because she adored ‘The Office.’ She’s someone with a significant role in sports, yet she doesn’t take herself too seriously. Instead of demanding a more dramatic portrayal, she expressed a desire for humor.”
Kaling further highlighted the glamorous and multifaceted nature of Buss’s personality, noting, “She was glamorous and gorgeous and single for a long time while serving as president of a team. This complexity provides a rich foundation for our writers.”
Brenda Song on Collaborative Dynamics
Brenda Song, who portrays a character inspired by Linda Rambis, expressed her appreciation for working alongside such esteemed colleagues. She remarked, “It’s incredible to collaborate with women I admire deeply. Sometimes, I can’t believe I’m in a room with these talented ladies. To seek their advice is invaluable, both as an actor and as a woman and mother. I’m truly grateful for this experience.”
Fans can look forward to the premiere of “Running Point,” which hits Netflix on February 27.
