Princess Kate to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with the Irish Guards
Princess Kate is preparing to raise a glass of Guinness this St. Patrick’s Day, marking a significant moment in her role as the honorary Colonel of the Irish Guards. The celebration will take place on March 11 at Wellington Barracks, as confirmed by Kensington Palace.
At the age of 43, Kate Middleton assumed the honorary Colonel title in 2022. However, her involvement with the event predates this appointment, as she has been a fixture at the parade, often joining her husband, Prince William, who previously held the position.
This year’s parade will be particularly special for Kate, as she returns following her absence in 2023 due to health issues. After undergoing abdominal surgery in January 2024, she disclosed her cancer diagnosis later that same month, which had kept her away from public engagements.
Princess Kate’s last presence at the St. Patrick’s Day parade was notable, as she donned a striking teal outfit that coordinated with the feathers of the Irish Guards’ bearskin caps. That occasion also highlighted her first appearance as honorary colonel, a title she received after Queen Elizabeth II passed away in 2022.
During the upcoming parade, the Princess will participate in several time-honored traditions, including awarding long service and good conduct medals to members of the regiment. A highlight of the event will be her presentation of shamrocks to the officers and guardsmen, alongside a special treat for the regiment’s Irish Wolf Hound mascot.
The event will culminate in a royal salute where Princess Kate will officially take the salute as the colonel of the regiment. Following the parade, she is set to engage with veterans of the Irish Guards and the Mini Micks, junior cadets from Northern Ireland. Additionally, she will partake in the official photographs with the regiment’s officers and sergeants and celebrate with a traditional toast of beer in the dining hall.
Despite the challenges posed by her health, Princess Kate made a rare appearance at the Trooping the Colour in June 2024, where the Irish Guards led the parade. Although she did not participate in the Colonel’s Review prior, she expressed her pride and support for the regiment through a heartfelt letter.
In her communication, she conveyed her admiration for the regiment’s dedication and expressed her disappointment at not being able to attend the review. She signed off the message as “Colonel Catherine,” emphasizing her ongoing commitment to her role.
At the most recent St. Patrick’s Day parade in 2023, Princess Kate expressed her enthusiasm for leading the Irish Guards, stating her dedication to their service and duties. Her remarks underscored her respect for the regiment and acknowledged the legacy left by her predecessor, Prince William.
As the March 17 celebration approaches, anticipation builds for Princess Kate’s return to the St. Patrick’s Day festivities, where her continued support for the Irish Guards will undoubtedly be a focal point.
