The journey to produce Lee spanned nearly a decade, during which Winslet often found herself pondering the feasibility of the project. “I thought to myself, ‘Oh my God, how is this ever going to happen? How am I going to keep going?’” This sentiment echoes many creative struggles faced by filmmakers.

Winslet’s challenges resonated deeply with Miller, who herself confronted skepticism while documenting the atrocities of World War II for Vogue. To maintain the momentum of their project, Winslet and her producing partner, Kate Solomon, opted to share living quarters temporarily, allowing them to refine the script and coordinate with the cast even late into the night. “We’d rewrite scenes just to ensure everything aligned correctly as we went. Some nights, I only managed a few hours of sleep,” Winslet elaborates, describing the grueling pace during the nine-week shoot in Hungary, Croatia, and the UK.

The intensity of the project consumed Winslet’s life for a significant period, leading her family to express relief at the conclusion of production. Despite the sacrifices and challenges, she remains appreciative of the experience, especially when reflecting on her modest beginnings.

Growing up in a working-class family in southern England, Winslet’s ascent to stardom has been remarkable.
