NASCAR Xfinity Race Sees Multi-Car Pileup

During Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity race, a significant incident unfolded with just 13 laps remaining. A miscommunication among spotters led to a multi-car crash that ended the day for drivers Katherine Legge, Aric Almirola, and Jeffrey Earnhardt.

Prior to the crash, Legge experienced a milestone moment, having led her first lap in NASCAR during a round of green-flag pit stops. Positioned around 15th place, she was caught off guard when Almirola attempted to merge in front of her, resulting in a collision that also involved Earnhardt and Brandon Jones. The latter narrowly avoided a more severe accident as his car was nearly overturned after being struck from behind.

Over the radio, Almirola expressed frustration, telling his spotter, “Come on! I went exactly when you said to get up!” To which the spotter responded, “You were plenty clear when I first said it. I promise you.”

This incident marks Legge’s third consecutive race this season in which she failed to finish, following similar outcomes in both the Cup race at Phoenix and the previous Xfinity race at Rockingham. She ultimately placed 34th in Saturday’s event.

Reflecting on the crash, Almirola commented, “The middle lane was just fizzling out there, and I crashed myself, I guess. I had a quick hole and the spotter said ‘clear,’ so I moved. Obviously wasn’t clear since I crashed. Katherine (Legge) didn’t do anything wrong; she was right where she needed to be. I turned across her nose.”

Despite her premature exit from the race, Legge maintained an optimistic outlook, stating to reporters, “Honestly, I was having so much fun, and the car was awesome. Jordan Anderson Racing did a phenomenal job giving me a great car. I thought we were going to have a great day, but we can’t catch a break. It is what it is. I’m really grateful that I’m here. I had a blast.”

Legge’s next scheduled race is on May 3rd at the NASCAR Xfinity Series event at Texas Motor Speedway.
