The Writers Guild of America East (WGAE) is proud to announce that Kathy McGee, an Emmy Award-winning writer and producer at WCBS-TV, will be honored with the Richard B. Jablow Award for her devoted service. The accolade will be presented during the 2025 WGA Awards.
This milestone marks the 77th installment of the prestigious event, which is scheduled to take place at the Edison Ballroom in New York City on February 15.
McGee has been a significant figure within WGAE, serving as a council member from 2014 to 2019 before becoming vice president from 2019 to 2021. Most recently, she held the role of vice president for the broadcast/cable/streaming news sector between 2022 and 2024.
Since joining WGAE in 1997, McGee has focused on producing compelling narratives about theater and cultural arts for WCBS-TV’s evening newscasts at 5 p.m., 6 p.m., 8 p.m., and 11 p.m. Her commitment to Broadway is particularly noteworthy, as she co-produced the CBS special “At The Tonys,” which is broadcast each June. Additionally, she has been a shop leader at WCBS-TV since 2006, participating actively in the bargaining committee for CBS contracts.
In addition to her responsibilities at WCBS-TV, McGee takes an active role in numerous organizations, including the WGA East committee for Inclusion and Equity, the WGAE Activities Committee, and the WGAE Black Writers Salon. She is also affiliated with the National Association of Black Journalists, emphasizing her commitment to diversity and inclusion within the industry.
Reflecting on her career, McGee expressed her pride in advocating for journalists and storytellers over nearly 40 years, stating, “I began my broadcast news career nearly 40 years ago and am proud to have spent the last two decades in solidarity with members of the WGA East advocating for journalists and storytellers while encouraging the next generation of union leaders.”
WGA East president Lisa Takeuchi Cullen praised McGee, stating, “I can think of no one more deserving of the Jablow Award than my friend and colleague Kathy McGee. Over the many, crisis-filled years we worked side by side, Kathy never failed to lead with calm, compassion, and curiosity.”
