Katie Cunningham Joins Nosy Crow Inc. as Publisher
As of March 18, Katie Cunningham has stepped into the role of publisher at Nosy Crow Inc. Her previous expertise was honed at Candlewick Press, where she served as senior vice president of editorial and associate publisher until she departed in late 2024. Cunningham’s journey at Candlewick began in 2003 as an editorial assistant, eventually leading to her promotion to associate publisher in November 2023.
Cunningham has made a notable impact in the publishing world, particularly through her dedication to elevating debut authors. She played a key role in bringing forth Jessica Love’s acclaimed picture book Julián Is a Mermaid, a recipient of the Stonewall Book Award. Other significant works she championed include Rescue and Jessica by Jessica Kensky and Patrick Downes, awarded the Schneider Family Book Award, and Gather, a debut novel by Kenneth M. Cadow, which was celebrated as a finalist for both the National Book Award and the Printz Award, and earned the 2024 Kirkus Prize.
In her editorial career, Cunningham also collaborated with established authors and illustrators. Noteworthy projects include work with Matt Tavares on his popular holiday title Dasher and the graphic novel Hoops; poet Charles R. Smith Jr. on the Sports Royalty series; and basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for What Color Is My World: The Lost History of African-American Inventors, which garnered an NAACP Image Award.
Founded in 2010 by Kate Wilson in the U.K., Nosy Crow expanded to launch a U.S. division in 2022, led by president John Mendelson. In its inaugural year, Nosy Crow Inc. published 30 titles and is set to release 100 titles by 2025. Cunningham’s team members include editors Jennifer B. Greene and Allison Hunter Hill, assistant editor Sofie Jones, and Phoebe Kosman, who joined in January as head of marketing and communications.
Commenting on Cunningham’s appointment, Mendelson expressed his confidence in her abilities, stating, “I don’t think it’s an overstatement to say that Katie is a visionary leader and an extraordinary editorial talent. Even more than these attributes, she is a consummate teammate, and I am so excited to work alongside her as we continue to support our current publishing output and begin in earnest the process of originating books here in North America.”
Cunningham herself remarked on her new position, stating, “As a longtime admirer of Nosy Crow, I was delighted, though not at all surprised, to see Nosy Crow take off on a running start in the U.S. under John Mendelson’s leadership. I’m thrilled to join Jennifer, Allison, Sofie, John, Kate, and all of the committed, creative, and hardworking team to create books that will speak to children read after read—because every child deserves a favorite book.”
