Katy Perry and All-Female Blue Origin Crew Gear Up for Space Mission

Katy Perry recently offered a glimpse into the unique space suits that she, Lauren Sanchez, Gayle King, and other female members of the all-women Blue Origin team will don for their upcoming launch scheduled for Monday. This event marks a significant moment in space exploration, as it will highlight the achievements of women in a traditionally male-dominated field.

On her Instagram, Perry shared a group photo, conveying her excitement with a caption that resonated with the occasion: “Happy International Day of Human Space Flight. Forever in awe of the Universe and its alignment.” In the shared photo, the crew, including scientists and activists such as Amanda Nguyen and Aisha Bowe, sport dark blue jumpsuit-style suits featuring a NASA patch, their last names, as well as the Blue Origin logo on one arm.

Sanchez, who is also engaged to Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos, shared some behind-the-scenes footage capturing the initial reactions to their new suits, including a moment of celebration as she entered a room to applause. This reaction underscores the enthusiasm surrounding their mission.

The design of their suits has drawn particular interest, with Sanchez revealing that she played an integral part in the redesign process. This involved collaborating with Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim from Monse, who are also known for their work with Oscar de la Renta. She detailed how traditional suits are typically tailored from men’s fittings to accommodate women but aimed to create something that truly reflects female individuality: “I think the suits are elegant, but they also bring a little spice to space,” Sanchez explained. Highlighting their playful attitude, she added a quote from Perry: “We’re putting the ‘a–’ in astronaut.”

Perry expanded on this idea during an interview with Elle, proclaiming, “Space is going to finally be glam. Let me tell you something. If I could take glam up with me, I would do that. We are going to put the ‘a–‘ in astronaut.” This commentary embodies the spirit of creativity and style that the crew is bringing into the cosmic realm.

The crew’s mission is set for April 14, where they will ascend approximately 62 miles, a journey that will last around 11 minutes and reach the edge of the atmosphere, though they won’t achieve orbit. This flight will mark a historic moment as it will be the first all-women crew to launch into space since Valentina Tereshkova’s solo flight in 1963, a milestone that underscores ongoing strides toward gender equality in the field of space exploration.

As the countdown to this ground-breaking flight begins, anticipation builds not only for the mission’s success but also for the broader implications it carries for future female astronauts and the visibility of women in science and exploration.
