Protests Against Trump’s Administration Expand Nationwide
Recent protests organized by the Hand’s Off Coalition have brought together numerous individuals advocating for significant changes in government policies. The group’s demands, as outlined in a public statement, emphasize a call to halt the “billionaire takeover” seen during the Trump administration. Activists expressed a strong opposition to budget cuts affecting vital social programs including Medicaid and Social Security, and voiced concerns regarding the treatment of marginalized groups such as immigrants and the LGBTQ+ community.
Among the feedback from protesters was opposition to Elon Musk’s perceived accumulation of power, with statements highlighting how “Trump, Musk, and congressional Republicans are gutting services, raising prices, and racing towards slashing Medicaid, Social Security, and more.” The events were characterized by a sense of urgency and a unified call for action against these policies.
In New York City, the protests saw thousands marching from Bryant Park to Madison Square Park, while tens of thousands congregated at the National Mall in Washington, DC. Additional demonstrations took place in cities like Hollywood, Florida—near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort—and even internationally, with solidarity events reported in Paris and London among other European locations.
During the significant gathering in Washington, DC, key Democratic representatives addressed the attendees. Maryland’s Jamie Raskin made a striking comparison, likening the president’s approach to governance to “the politics of Mussolini and the economics of Herbert Hoover.” Other notable speakers included Minnesota’s Ilhan Omar and Florida’s Maxwell Frost, who encouraged participants to actively engage in the movement through donations to mutual aid organizations and by pressing their elected officials to pay attention to their demands.
Throughout the events, chants such as “hey ho, Trump’s gotta go” and “power to the people” resonated among the crowds. Protesters showcased a wide array of placards featuring messages like “Hands Off Education,” “Fuck Musk,” and “Resist, Resist,” reflecting their sentiments regarding the current political climate.
