Kemi Badenoch Claims Lib Dems Are Just Roof Repairers. That’s Exactly Why We’re Popular and She Isn’t | Ed Davey

Are you familiar with someone who excels at maintaining the local church roof? Or perhaps someone who is well-regarded within your community? According to Kemi Badenoch, leader of the Conservative Party, that person is likely to represent the Liberal Democrats in the upcoming local elections.

Badenoch claimed that a Liberal Democrat is “somebody who is good at fixing their church roof. And … the people in the community like them.”

It seems she intended to make a disparaging remark. However, many Liberal Democrat candidates—over 1,000 vying for election across England on May 1—would proudly embrace this description. Her comments reflect a significant disconnect within the Conservative Party as they face challenges in 2025, revealing an attitude that appears detached from community service and concerns.

After the Conservative Party was rightfully ousted from power last year by public vote, many communities are still grappling with the consequences of ineffective Tory-led councils. In many regions, from Cornwall to Cambridgeshire, the Liberal Democrats stand out as the primary challengers. We believe that being a champion for local issues—whether it’s fixing a church roof, repairing potholes, or cleaning up rivers—is a vital cause worth supporting.

During my travels across the nation in recent weeks, using various modes of transport including swan boats and diggers, I encountered numerous local individuals expressing their desire to remove Conservative leadership from local government.

However, beneath this frustration looms a sense of disappointment with the new Labour government. Before taking a thrilling ride at the Big Sheep theme park in Devon, the owner shared concerns about how Labour’s policies have exacerbated conditions rather than improved them. The hospitality sector, particularly in the South West, is facing severe challenges. Across the country, there’s a palpable sense of disillusionment, with issues like cuts to winter fuel payments forcing vulnerable populations to make impossible choices between heating and eating, alongside the persistent crisis in social care.

This political environment—anger directed at the Conservatives and disappointment with Labour—creates space for the simplistic rhetoric of figures like Nigel Farage and his Reform UK party to resonate. Yet, these figures fail to offer concrete solutions.

Let’s be clear: If you seek to improve the NHS, why would you trust someone who has previously advocated replacing the public healthcare system with an insurance-based model? If the quality of British food matters to you, why would you back a proponent of importing US chlorinated chicken? And if you value national integrity, why align with someone who admires Vladimir Putin over standing up for the UK?

In the Hull and East Yorkshire mayoral race, what many anticipated would be a contest solely between Liberals and Labour is instead turning into a face-off between the Liberal Democrats and Reform. Bookmakers now see the Liberal Democrats and Reform as frontrunners, leaving Labour trailing in fourth. When considering the performance of these parties in local governance, the contrast is stark. The Liberal Democrats have demonstrated effective leadership in Hull and other councils, whereas Farage’s party is marred by internal conflicts and dysfunction, questioning their capability to manage essential services like waste collection.

The core distinction lies in the commitment of the Liberal Democrats to serving our communities diligently. On May 1, remember that whether it’s repairing a church roof, tackling local crime, or accessing healthcare, the Liberal Democrats are dedicated to advocating for a fair deal for you and your community.
