Kenya Moore Inspires Young Minds with History Lesson at Daughter’s School

Kenya Moore took a special trip to her daughter Brooklyn Daly’s school recently, engaging with her classmates to impart a lesson on Black history and women’s contributions to society.

On Thursday, March 6, the former star of Real Housewives of Atlanta, aged 54, shared her thoughts about the enlightening experience she had while addressing the students in Brooklyn’s class. Moore, who co-parents Brooklyn with her ex-husband, Marc Daly, emphasized the importance of recognizing and honoring the achievements of Black women throughout history.

During her presentation, Moore recalled her significant achievement as the second-ever Black woman to win the title of Miss USA. At just 22 years old, she first claimed the title of Miss Michigan USA in 1993 before being crowned Miss USA that same year. The title’s history is relevant, as Carole Anne-Marie Gist had previously made history as the first Black woman to win it in 1990.

In a video shared on Instagram, Moore introduced herself as “Brooklyn’s mommy” to the eager young audience before diving into her impactful personal history.

As she spoke, Moore highlighted the qualities that were valued in pageantry: intelligence, kindness, and recognizing the accomplishments of others. “As I participated in pageants, it was essential for us to be smart and show kindness to everyone,” she explained to the students.

Moore went on to address the societal misconceptions about beauty, particularly the bias against Black women. “There was a time when some people believed that Black wasn’t beautiful. Can you imagine that?” she asked the class, prompting immediate responses of disbelief from the children.

With warmth and humor, Moore continued, reflecting on the struggles faced by many Black women: “Many were not acknowledged for their beauty because of their brown skin and curly hair. These traits were often seen as different, leading to misconceptions about beauty.” She motivated the children to value education and character, stating, “I worked hard and remained focused because I wanted to change perceptions.”

“It’s not about external judgment; it’s about who you are inside,” she emphasized. Her message culminated in a powerful statement about redefining beauty standards through her Miss USA title, asserting, “By winning, I aimed to reshape perceptions of beauty. Brown skin is beautiful—can we all say that?” The students enthusiastically responded in agreement.

Moore reinforced the message, stating, “Black is beautiful,” a sentiment that was echoed back by the class.

Reflecting on her visit, Moore expressed in her Instagram caption that it was a privilege to teach these “bright and curious six-year-olds” about the deeper meaning of beauty—encompassing confidence, kindness, and self-acceptance. She described the experience as “deeply meaningful,” noting its potential to inspire young minds to envision great aspirations and recognize beauty in themselves and the greater world around them.

Moore concluded her post by proudly affirming her feelings about being part of a school community that promotes parental involvement in education. She acknowledged the power of representation and the importance of sharing personal narratives. “Thank you to all the parents who also presented,” she said, urging women everywhere to inspire future generations of women to strive for change and achievement in the world.
