“Kid Hair Color” Set to Be This Year’s Must-Try Beauty Trend

For the upcoming year of 2025, striking hair colors such as vibrant reds and light blondes are expected to emerge as popular trends. However, a more understated movement is gaining traction: a return to one’s natural hair color, sparking interest in the “kid hair color” phenomenon that is reshaping beauty routines.

The “Kid Hair Color” Trend

If you’ve ever looked back at photos and admired your natural hair hue, you’re not alone. This nostalgia has fueled a trend that is encouraging many to embrace their authentic hair colors.

“The ‘kid hair color’ trend is becoming increasingly popular as clients desire naturalistic tones reminiscent of the unblemished colors often seen in children’s hair,” states Julie Dickson, a master stylist and founder of Joon Drop Salon. “This trend emphasizes returning to your original hair color, using tones that flatter your skin tone, eye color, and facial dimensions to elevate your innate beauty.”

Although every individual’s hair color is different, the end result tends to convey the same aesthetic. “The outcome is a subtle, sophisticated hue that looks sun-kissed or lightly highlighted, as if it has developed naturally over time,” Dickson explains.

Notable celebrities like Hailey Bieber have showcased this trend, sporting a delicate dark blonde balayage that recalls her childhood highlights. Similarly, Lily-Rose Depp flaunts a stylish dark blonde paired with soft highlights that evoke her younger days.

Lindsay Lohan, too, has found a shade that beautifully matches her features. “Her recent look is a natural strawberry blonde, with hints of creamy blonde and muted apricot, reminiscent of sun-lightened tones,” notes Juliana Ohlmeyer, a colorist at Bassia Bassia in New York City. This slightly strays from her original dark copper as a child.

The Allure of Childhood Hair Shades

The appeal of this trend can be traced to its “less is more” philosophy, as it evokes an essence of youth that is both natural and nostalgic.

“This approach is refreshing — it mimics the vibrant shades you’d get after a long summer of playing outside and swimming,” observes Ohlmeyer. “It’s a delightful expression of self-love that many are seeking, especially as they opt for more manageable hair colors in 2025.”

Additionally, this trend promises minimal damage since it often doesn’t require bleaching. “Using little to no bleach helps maintain the health of the hair,” Dickson adds.

Interestingly, the trend also offers a clever method for concealing gray hairs. “This approach allows for blending in gray without the need for high-maintenance full coverage,” Ohlmeyer notes.

Achieving the Nostalgic Hair Color

If you’re convinced that “kid hair color” is for you, consult your hair colorist about subtle and low-maintenance tones, focusing on face-framing highlights, according to Ohlmeyer. “Hand-painted balayage is my preferred technique, but it varies based on the current darkness of your hair,” she explains.

“It’s beneficial to specify that you want soft warmth and dimension, employing two shades — one slightly lighter and warmer than your natural color, and another that’s just a touch darker — for an effortlessly blended result,” states Dickson.

When looking for inspiration, don’t hesitate to revisit old family photo albums. “I often encourage clients to bring in childhood pictures or images of their favorite hair colors,” shares Ohlmeyer. “Many showcase their own children’s hair or their hair from ages four to seven — often considered the zenith of health and natural highlights.”

This could be the perfect opportunity to relive those youthful hair days.
