Kieran Culkin Highlights Humor and Honesty at SAG Awards

Kieran Culkin showcased his comedic flair and candidness during his acceptance speech for the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award for Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in “A Real Pain.” With a light-hearted jab aimed at fellow nominees, he emphasized the importance of brevity on stage.

Upon receiving the award, Culkin remarked, “Thank you for this incredibly heavy award,” before playfully targeting Adrien Brody, reminding him that the designated speech time is 45 seconds. “I don’t think there’s any way anyone can hold this for 45 seconds… which is the allotted time, Adrien Brody!” His humor was met with laughter from the audience, including Brody, who took the jest in good spirits.

Culkin’s role in “A Real Pain,” where he stars alongside Jesse Eisenberg as two cousins on a Holocaust tour in Poland, lent a significant backdrop to his speech. Acknowledging the film’s director, who is also a close friend, Culkin humorously noted, “For those of you who don’t know, [Jesse] cast me in this movie without auditioning me or seeing my work or seeing me in anything ever… which he thinks is normal.” He attributed his casting to Eisenberg’s sister, Hallie, and expressed his gratitude, albeit with a cheeky critique of Eisenberg’s decision-making.

Culkin faced stiff competition for the award, including actors like Jonathan Bailey, Yura Borisov, Edward Norton, and Jeremy Strong. However, his recent accolades leading up to the SAG Awards positioned him as a favorite, having already won multiple awards, including the Golden Globe, Critics Choice Awards, and others.

In addition to celebrating his win, Culkin humorously pointed out the irony of actors awarding each other, quipping, “It’s funny that the heaviest of all awards is the one given by actors,” suggesting a fictional deliberation among peers about the weight of the SAG Award statue.

As he enters the current Oscar season, Culkin continues to build on accolades received for his portrayal of Roman Roy in HBO’s acclaimed series “Succession,” which earned him both an Emmy and a Golden Globe. Despite his success, he acknowledged the special significance of recognition from fellow entertainers: “It’s hard to be sincere,” he reflected, “but it’s actually a huge honor.”
