Upcoming Documentary on Andrea Kimi Antonelli Set to Premiere on Netflix

Netflix has unveiled the trailer for a highly anticipated documentary focused on rising Formula 1 star Andrea Kimi Antonelli, which is set to debut next week.

Titled ‘The Seat,’ the 45-minute film will stream starting Monday, May 5, and will chart the events of the past year as the young Italian prepares for his entry into Formula 1.

In August of the previous year, Mercedes officially announced Antonelli as the future replacement for Lewis Hamilton in 2025, while he was concurrently competing in his rookie season in Formula 2.

“Becoming an F1 driver with the Mercedes F1 Team is a dream realized,” remarked Antonelli, who has already participated in five grand prix races and currently sits sixth in the standings.

“During this journey, Toto and the team maintained continuous communication with me. ‘The Seat’ captures this experience from beginning to end. I’m eager for everyone to witness this journey on Netflix,” he added.

The trailer was actually released by WhatsApp, a partner of the Mercedes team, and it provides viewers with a sneak peek of the documentary. It promises exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, from the internal selection process to Antonelli’s practice debut at Monza, alongside personal insights into his life.

“Selecting Kimi as our race driver for 2025 was a significant decision, and ‘The Seat’ chronicles this process,” said Toto Wolff, Mercedes F1 chief. The trailer showcases Wolff informing Antonelli of his promotion.

“WhatsApp played a crucial role in facilitating this decision. It served as a private channel that helped our team manage Kimi’s development, discuss his progress, and ultimately convey our choice to him,” Wolff explained.

“We are excited to provide F1 fans a unique perspective on our decision-making process, showcasing how we arrived at this crucial moment in our team’s history.”

The documentary also features the moment Antonelli made his grand prix debut in Melbourne this year, an event that Netflix describes as “the biggest driver change in F1 history.”
