Angel Studios’ The King of Kings Set for Box Office Triumph
This weekend marks the theatrical release of Angel Studios’ debut animated feature, The King of Kings, which is anticipated to achieve significant box office success. Featuring Oscar Isaac as Jesus Christ, the film has generated impressive pre-sale numbers, totaling $14.6 million as reported by Deadline. This initial financial performance positions it to potentially claim the record for the highest-ever opening for an animated biblical film, surpassing the 27-year record of DreamWorks Animation’s The Prince of Egypt, which earned $14.5 million upon its release.
Not only does The King of Kings aim to outshine The Prince of Egypt, but it has also exceeded the advance ticket sales for Angel Studios’ previous blockbuster, Sound of Freedom, which grossed over $250 million worldwide. Supporting this latest release is a promotional campaign titled “Kids Go Free,” where patrons can redeem one complimentary child’s ticket with every adult ticket purchased. This initiative has proven successful, with more than 1.3 million tickets claimed thus far, contributing to the film’s pre-sale momentum.
Oscar Isaac Leads an All-Star Cast in The King of Kings
In this venture, Isaac departs from his role as Moon Knight in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to portray the teachings of Jesus in The King of Kings. He is joined by a distinguished cast including actors from popular franchises like Star Wars and James Bond. The esteemed ensemble features Kenneth Branagh as Charles Dickens, Uma Thurman as Catherine Dickens, Pierce Brosnan as Pontius Pilate, Mark Hamill as King Herod, Forest Whitaker as Peter, Roman Griffin Davis as Walter, and Ben Kingsley as High Priest Caiaphas. The film’s producer, Anfernee Kim, has commended the cast for their ability to bring the story to life through their vocal performances.
“The story of Jesus Christ deserves a remarkable cast, and the actors we have assembled—Oscar Isaac, Forest Whitaker, Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, and Roman Griffin Davis—are exceptional,” Kim noted. “Oscar’s portrayal captures the profound essence of Jesus’ teachings, while Forest adeptly portrays the complexities of Peter’s character.”
The film made its cinematic debut on April 11, strategically timed for the Easter season. Critics have assigned it a 66% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 32 reviews, but audiences have favored it with a remarkable 97% score on the Popcornmeter. Positive reviews highlight the film’s stunning animation, talented voice cast, and innovative narrative structure, suggesting that it is likely to enjoy a successful opening weekend at the box office.
