Kollmorgen has unveiled its latest innovation, the PCMM2G programmable motion controller, which promises to enhance automation systems with faster and more efficient operations. This new controller is designed for easy integration with the Kollmorgen Automation Suite as well as various third-party devices, making it versatile enough to serve everything from standalone machinery to sophisticated modular systems.
The PCMM2G offers compatibility with previous-generation models such as the PDMM and PCMM controllers. This grants users a straightforward transition path while delivering increased flexibility, boasting fieldbus cycle rates that are 1.5 to 3.5 times faster than its predecessors.
Kollmorgen emphasizes that the PCMM2G is not only designed for its existing customers but also for those utilizing other automation systems, thereby improving overall usability and performance. Chris Cooper, senior director of product management at Kollmorgen, remarked that the controller stands out for its speed, power, and extensive features. He expressed that it opens possibilities for advanced automation applications across various industrial environments.
Technical Specifications of the PCMM2G
Equipped with a powerful 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, the PCMM2G delivers exceptional cycle performances. It can control up to 64 axes of synchronized motion, enabling complex movements such as S-curves.
Additionally, the controller encompasses 16 GB of internal flash memory, six digital inputs, and two digital outputs, along with built-in functional safety modules and a human-machine interface. It facilitates fast system integration with 100BASE-T connectivity, supporting protocols such as UDP, HTTP, Modbus, Ethernet/IP, and PROFINET. The inclusion of dual Ethernet ports allows for flexible system configuration while remaining connected to industrial networks.
To maintain precise timing across all axes, the controller is equipped with a battery-backed real-time clock and can synchronize with external time-keeping servers via network time protocol (NTP).
Support for Users Transitioning to PCMM2G
For users of the PDMM and PCMM controllers, Kollmorgen offers migration support to ensure a smooth transition to the PCMM2G. This support extends to all customers, who can access both online and live assistance as needed.
The PCMM2G also features plug-and-play support, particularly beneficial for users of the Kollmorgen Automation Suite and other third-party systems. Integrated tools within the controller expedite network configuration, servo tuning, and machine optimization. It additionally supports file management with the help of a USB slot for removable flash drives.
When integrated with the complete Kollmorgen Automation Suite, the PCMM2G offers numerous advantages, including streamlined inventory management, reduced setup times, and a unified software experience. The company asserts that this ecosystem enables clients to rely on a single source for automation solutions with coordinated components and thorough system validation.
Kollmorgen, which has been a key player in motion control for over a century, boasts a diverse product range that includes motors, drives, linear actuators, AGV control systems, and various automation platforms. The company prides itself on delivering solutions that combine performance, reliability, and ease of use, providing machine builders a competitive edge in the marketplace.
Engagement Opportunities at RoboBusiness
Kollmorgen will showcase its latest offerings at RoboBusiness 2024 on October 16 and 17 in Santa Clara, California. It will be present at Booth 325 on the expo floor to engage with attendees.
Additionally, on October 16 at 2:45 p.m. PT, Todd Brewster, Kollmorgen’s director of electromagnetic engineering, will present a discussion on the evolution of motor science, focusing on how this technology enables robots to meet industrial demands and enhances their market viability. His session will provide insights on designing motors that improve thermal dynamics and efficiency in robotic applications while balancing considerations of weight, size, and cost.
For those interested in attending, registration is now open for RoboBusiness, which is occurring concurrently with DeviceTalks West, both hosted by WTWH Media.
