A South Korean YouTuber, known for his past involvement with the military’s special forces, has incurred a fine after filming an incident with streamer Johnny Somali.

In 2024, Johnny Somali, whose real name is Ramsey Khalid Ismael, ignited significant controversy in South Korea due to a series of provocations. His actions included erratic behavior such as performing inappropriate dances at the Statue of Peace, disruptions at local 7-Eleven stores, and delays to public transit services.

As Somali’s antics began to frustrate many locals, some took the initiative to confront him in person, leading to a highly publicized incident.

In October, Dalgeun Yu, a YouTuber and former member of the Underwater Demolition Team, aggressively approached Somali, reportedly to address his behavior. Following the confrontation, Yu faced repercussions for his actions.

In a widely circulated video, Yu tracked Somali to his location, where he struck the streamer with a punch, sending him to the ground before he was subsequently detained.

“I acted as a responsible citizen of South Korea,” Yu later expressed in a social media post defending his actions.

Now, Yu is appealing for financial help from his followers, estimating that he could face a fine of approximately $7,000 USD.

He claims he has been fined 10 million won for the altercation with Somali, which translates to roughly $7,000. Yu has reached out to his audience via PayPal for donations to cover this cost.

CORRECTION. I mentioned the “10 million won” fine that Dalgeun received. That’s an estimation, according to Legal Mindset. I’m sure Dalgeun can pay that off, but I don’t think it should be coming from his pockets, esp. if it means whipping Johnny Somali’s ass $7000 USD?! pic.twitter.com/O1f4EYvTyK

However, reports from the channel Legal Mindset indicate that Yu’s actual fine may be significantly lower at 1.5 million won (about $1,000), with the projected fine being higher. Importantly, this amount is designated for the government rather than Somali.

On a positive note, Yu has avoided any jail time, which had been a concern post-incident.

In contrast, Somali is grappling with his own legal challenges, having pleaded guilty to several charges and potential prison time related to creating deep fakes.

Moreover, Somali faces various accusations in South Korea, including serious allegations such as child sexual harassment, threats to spread HIV, promoting North Korean propaganda, and violations of anti-terrorism laws.
