Ryan McCormick Tries Unorthodox Method to Manage Anger During Club Car Championship

Korn Ferry Tour veteran Ryan McCormick explored an unusual approach to control his temper during the second round of the Club Car Championship this past Friday. This event took place at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club in Georgia, where McCormick faced challenges in maintaining his composure on the course.

The 2024 season marked a step back for McCormick, who had previously competed on the PGA Tour but found himself relegated to the developmental circuit this year. His struggles with anger on the golf course prompted him to seek out new methods for managing his frustrations.

In a rather unconventional move, McCormick taped his mouth shut during the round. Reflecting on this decision, he explained, “I’ve been having a frustrating year. It’s been tough, and I thought I’d try to keep my anger in check.” In a video shared on social media by the tour, he noted the effort was an experiment in self-regulation, saying, “I figured I’d shut myself up.”

He humorously added, “Just too angry on the golf course. I’ve tried a lot of things, and it just came down to this today. I hoped it might help, but I can’t say for sure if it did.” McCormick acknowledged his mood could affect his playing partners, admitting that he wanted to create a better environment for everyone involved.

Despite the peculiar solution, McCormick did face a logistical challenge: how to communicate with his caddie while his mouth was taped. He resorted to using pen and paper to convey information, stating, “Mostly just writing down the numbers… It made things a lot simpler.”

While McCormick’s experimental technique might have added some levity to his round, it did not translate into improved performance on the course. He finished the day with a score of 72, narrowly missing the cut by a few strokes. Currently ranked No. 126 on the points list, his standing is expected to decline further following this tournament.

This episode underscores the ongoing mental and emotional challenges that golfers face, particularly those struggling to find their form under competitive pressure. As McCormick continues his journey in professional golf, fans and fellow players alike will be watching to see how he manages the ups and downs of the sport.
