MOSCOW (Reuters) – The Kremlin asserted on Tuesday that Ukraine possesses the independent right to make its own decision regarding potential membership in the European Union, emphasizing that Moscow would not impose its views on Kyiv regarding this matter.
In response to inquiries about Ukraine’s potential EU membership, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated, “This is the sovereign right of any country.”
He further elaborated, emphasizing that discussions surrounding integration, particularly in terms of economic connections, are a national prerogative. “No one can dictate anything to any country, and we are not going to do that,” Peskov remarked.
However, Peskov clarified that Russia’s stance diverges significantly when the topic shifts to Ukraine’s participation in military groups. He expressed that the dynamics change significantly in relation to security and defense issues, stating, “There is a completely different position, of course, on security-related issues related to defence or military alliances.”
