Santa Barbara Film Festival to Honor Artisans Amid Challenges
The upcoming Artisans Awards, presented by Variety, will recognize notable talents in the film industry, including Oscar-nominated artists such as Kris Bowers for “The Wild Robot,” Clément Ducol and Camille for “Emilia Perez,” Paul Tazewell for “Wicked,” and Judy Becker for “The Brutalist.”
Now in its 11th year, the Artisans Awards will take place on February 8 during the Santa Barbara Film Festival (SBIFF).
With the city of Los Angeles recently impacted by severe wildfires that affected approximately 200,000 individuals and resulted in widespread destruction, this year’s festival will carry a significant emotional weight. Roger Durling, the festival’s creative director, expressed the importance of moving forward with the event. He remarked, “As the tragic events in our sister city of Los Angeles were unfolding, we debated about moving forward with SBIFF. Film has always been a conduit for comfort and renewal, and film festivals play a vital role in fostering a sense of connection… We will put in place an initiative during it to raise funds for LA in partnership with Direct Relief.”
During the festival, all donations will be matched through a generous $100,000 grant, as part of a collaboration between SBIFF and Direct Relief.
The Artisans Awards will focus on honoring the creative individuals behind some of the year’s most acclaimed films, facilitating discussions that highlight their significant contributions to the industry.
Durling emphasized the collaborative nature of filmmaking, stating, “This event highlights the fact that film, at its heart, is one of the most collaborative of the arts — and these extraordinary artists being celebrated are the cream of the crop of this past year in cinema. And in the spirit of collaboration, SBIFF loves partnering with Variety for this one of a kind and unforgettable evening.”
Jazz Tangcay, the senior artisans editor at Variety and host of the ceremony, reflected on the resilience of the Los Angeles community amidst adversity. “We are all thankful to the first responders and firefighters… Art has always brought people together in tough times, and so, with this festival, Roger and the artisans, may it connect us and allow us to celebrate the films and music and slowly help us heal,” she stated.
