Kurt Cobain famously smashed a white Fender Stratocaster back in 1992, and now this iconic piece of music history is making headlines as it shatters auction records!
Dylan Kosinski, president of the reputable music auction platform Gottahaverockandroll, reported to TMZ that Cobain’s damaged guitar fetched an impressive $101,500 from a collector in Texas after the auction concluded yesterday.
The auction sparked considerable excitement, leading to a competitive bidding war involving five bidders who placed a total of 11 bids before a victor emerged.
The starting bid was set at $30,000, meaning the final sale price exceeded expectations by a substantial margin.
This particular guitar was smashed during Nirvana’s European tour in 1992 but was restored to playing condition while the band was still on tour.
Acquired by a crewmember who was part of Nirvana’s team from 1991 to 1993, the instrument was subsequently authenticated by Big John Duncan, a renowned guitar technician linked with the band.
While this sale is significant, it still pales in comparison to the highest price ever paid for a Cobain guitar; one used during the recording of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” sold for a staggering $4.5 million.
Nevertheless, a sale of over $100,000 is certainly no small feat, undoubtedly putting the seller in a favorable financial position.
