Deadly Missile and Drone Attacks Hit Kyiv and Kharkiv
In a devastating overnight assault, at least two individuals lost their lives and 54 others sustained injuries, including several children, due to a Russian missile and drone offensive targeting Ukraine’s capital city of Kyiv, as reported by the city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko.
Mayor Klitschko indicated that debris from fallen drones ignited multiple fires throughout the city, raising concerns that several individuals could be trapped in the rubble of a collapsed residential building.
The state emergencies service of Ukraine, known as DSNS, later updated the casualty figures to nine deceased and 63 injured, citing initial assessments.
Additionally, local authorities reported explosions in Kharkiv, located in the northeastern part of Ukraine, which also faced attacks. At least two people were reported hurt from these strikes.
In a social media statement, Klitschko highlighted that among those injured were six children and a pregnant woman, articulating the attack’s indiscriminate nature. He noted, “Fires broke out in six locations,” while expressing concern that there were still people trapped beneath the debris of a destroyed building.
Rescue teams were observed meticulously searching through the wreckage in the hope of finding survivors amidst the chaos.
The Svyatoshynskyi district in western Kyiv was identified as the area experiencing the most severe impact from the attacks.
Footage circulating on social media appears to capture missiles striking Kyiv, sparking extensive fires and destruction.
Kharkiv’s Mayor Ihor Terekhov confirmed that two residents were hospitalized due to injuries sustained from the missile strikes on private homes.
Ukraine’s air force issued a warning, stating that nearly all regions of the country remain at risk of airstrikes as the situation escalates.
As of now, the Russian military has not issued any statements regarding these recent attacks.
