“Well, I think it really, so much in football comes down to the money piece,” Rudolph explained. “When you have a salary cap, you’re trying to build a roster, and unfortunately, you have to make decisions based on the salary cap ramifications.” He further elaborated on Darnold’s situation, suggesting that his desire for a lucrative contract could lead him to seek opportunities elsewhere if Minnesota cannot match his financial aspirations.

Rudolph discussed the possibility of the Vikings employing the franchise tag on Darnold, which could allow them to retain him for an additional year, albeit at a substantial salary cap impact. He indicated that this could complicate their financial situation, stating it would be “really, really tough” to envision Darnold returning if his priority is maximizing his contract.

“They look for things that trigger, ‘Oh, that’s a foul. That’s a penalty,’” he commented, defending the integrity of officiating. “I don’t think there’s favoritism. We have all the resources in the world to find out about any biases, and if that were ever the case, we would know.” This perspective highlights the complexities involved in the ongoing critiques of officiating in high-stakes games.
